In order to build up a strong “structure” of legitimacy the authority of the capitalist society sanctioned a Habermas argued that a legitimation crisis occurs when the citizenry experiences a democratic shortfall: in other words, when people feel under-represented. He is well aware that the formal democracy characteristic of modern and highly differentiated societies falls well short of substantive or participatory democracy. The concept of legitimation is therefore central for Habermas and he means by it that there are good arguments for a political order’s claim to be considered right and just, a political order’s worthiness to be recognized. Then, I reconstruct Jürgen Habermas’s 1973 book, Legitimation Crisis, as an account of the form this political contradiction assumed in one specific phase of capitalist society, namely, the state-managed capitalism of the post–World War II era. In his latest work, Habermas has returned to the study of capitalism, incorporating the distinctive modifications of the Frankfurt School into the foundations of the critique of capitalism.
